Chapter Six

Sam pulled his truck into the Landings parking lot just after seven. He was meeting Jackson, Zane, and Randy for drinks and to watch the baseball game. Sam should have been excited to hang out with his buddies but he couldn’t stop thinking about E.

He’d managed to go the entire day without calling or texting the man. E made it perfectly clear he wasn’t looking to be in a relationship and Sam would respect that. He wouldn’t pressure E one way or another, but he really hoped that E would come around. The chemistry between them was explosive and they just clicked. They could talk and laugh about anything, it seemed. Sam was stupid to think everything would ever be perfect between them but no relationship was perfect. Sam just had to find a way to convince E he was worth taking a chance on.

“Look at you,” Jackson said in greeting when Sam walked up to the table. Zane sat across the table from Jackson, laughing. “Fuck, bro, I think you’re glowing.”

“Fuck you.” Sam pulled out the chair beside Jackson and sat down. “Hey, Zane, how’s it going?”

Zane worked with Jackson at the fire station. Sam had gotten to know the guy pretty well in the past few months. Zane was super sweet and very easy on the eyes. Zane stood about six foot five inches, thick with strong and well-defined muscles. His dark brown hair was cut short to his scalp and he had the most intriguing pale blue eyes. The guy was gorgeous. When he smiled, two small dimples showed on his cheeks. For the longest time Sam just assumed that Zane was straight. He looked like a straight guy, but he’d been wrong. It just went to show Sam he couldn’t judge a book by its cover.

“Good, but from what Jackson says not as good as you.” Zane chuckled.

“You’re an asshole.” Sam narrowed his eyes at Jackson.

“Oh, what, are you going to deny that you didn’t try to suck that poor man’s face down your throat in my driveway last night?” Jackson raised his beer mug to his mouth and took a drink.

“You saw that, did you?” Sam clamped his eyes shut and he let his head fall forward between his shoulders.

“Kind of hard to miss.” Jackson clamped his heavy hand on Sam’s shoulder, giving him a good shake. “So did ya know?” Jackson wiggled his eyebrows.

“Did he what?” Everyone at the table turned at the sound of Randy’s loud, boisterous voice.

“Nothing,” Sam snapped. If Randy knew he hooked up with E last night he’d never hear the end of it.

“Nothing my ass. What’s going on?” Randy glanced between Jackson and Sam. As if just noticing Zane sitting beside him, Randy said, “Hey Zane.”

“Hey,” Zane said softly. A bright blush coloring his cheeks.

“So would one of you assholes please tell me what you’re all talking about? Preferably before I get old.” Randy sat up a little higher in his chair, looking for a waitress to wave down.
